NFPA 70E (2012) - Module 4: Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing
This self-paced online training course covers the general requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) and flame resistant (FR) clothing and how to select PPE for the specific hazards involved with various tasks. This course also includes "Playing It Safe," a series of self-study questions.
Upon completion you should be able to:
- Outline the selection criteria for PPE
- Identify the risk/hazard category for a task using Table 130.7(C)(9)(a)
- Recognize the characteristics of PPE suitable for different types of work on electrical parts
Who Will Benefit
Anyone whose job involves designing, reviewing, evaluating or installing fire protection systems, including: designers, installers, engineers, electrical contractors, technicians, project managers, fire marshals, and architects.
Minimum Computer System Requirements
- There are items of PPE and FR clothing for every area on your body that could be exposed to electrical hazards. Manufacturers design many of these to meet the requirements of specific standards. NFPA 70E provides tables that make PPE selection relatively easy for some common tasks.
- The Hazard/Risk Category Classifications Table gives each task a Hazard/Risk Category number. Find your tasks HRC number from this table. and confirm that the short-circuit current values and clearing times comply with the note(s)? for that task.
- Using the HRC number, check the PPE "Matrix" to select the required equipment and clothing for your task.
- Check the Protective Clothing Characteristics Table to make sure your selected clothing meets minimum arc rating requirements.
- When you select protective clothing and equipment, make sure that it:
- is clean and free of defects;
- complies with all applicable standards;
- fits and covers you as it should; and
- allows you to perform your work without interference.
- Arc flash hazards may give rise to a need for unique protective equipment, such as flash suits and special face, hand, and foot protection.
